The Headington Shark

New High Street - Headington. Just your standard residential English street... Except, what the hell is that?

Comissioned by Bill Heine who owns the house, the shark was created by sculptor John Buckley and installed on August 9th, 1986. Oxford City Council made several attempts to have the sculpture removed or relocated on the grounds that it was either dangerous or needed planning permission. The fight is long over and the Shark is a fixture of Headington, to the extent that last month a street party was held for the Shark's 25th birthday. More information here.

  1. It should have been a whale, or a bowl of petunias!
